Youth showcase their vision of Global Goals in #WorldYouSee contest

Four winners of #WorldYouSee, an online photography contest organised by the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub office, came together last week in Istanbul to receive their awards.

The contest was organised in recognition of the newly adopted 2030 Development Goals (SDGs). In asking “What’s your vision?”, the contest aims to generate dialogue among today’s youth about their role in the future of development, and more specifically on Goal 16, which focuses on justice, peace and good governance.

Accepting the award on behalf of her twin-sister Ainur Jyekyei from Kazakhstan, said Altannur Jyekyei, “My sister is very passionate about environmental justice. For her, the SDGs represent a chance to take individual action, so she was inspired to participate in a contest that aims to raise awareness.”

The four winners each received a GoPro camera, as well as a trip to Istanbul. They were accompanied on their tour by journalist Levent Kulu, with whom they photographed the city, particularly scenes of inequality they witnessed around them.

“Good governance, peace and justice can be achieved with the participation of youth in civil society programs, because young people bring in new ideas. Governments should be ready to hear these voices and integrate them into their programming,” said Inkar Atikuzhin from Kyrgyzstan. Atikuzhin’s winning image framed justice as the fight for marriage equality.

Other winners of the contest included Meder Musaev from Kyrgystan and Serbia’s Milica Tomasevic.

The contest was launched on October 2, 2015. People aged 18-30 living in Europe and Central Asia were encouraged to submit photos, animations or illustrations that expressed what peace, justice and good governance meant to them.

The submissions were collected on the Iconosquare platform. A panel of judges consisting of journalists, photographers and development experts chose the winning images.

Addressing the winners at the award ceremony, Rastislav Vrbensky, the Manager of the Istanbul Regional Hub, said: “We are very proud that the SDG framework takes into account the priorities of young people. We will continue to work with our country offices to ensure that the voices of youth are an active part of the work we do. The #WorldYouSee contest has been a solid beginning in that journey.”

The winning images will be used in UNDP’s online and offline publications.
