Mr. Gerald Gunther, a native of Berlin, has been UN Women Representative Kyrgyzstan since May 2015, having acted as OIC since February 2015.
Prior to joining UN Women in Bishkek in May 2012 Gerald was Deputy Representative of UNFPA Afghanistan from 2008 to 2012.
Gerald has experience in women’s economic and political empowerment, ending violence against women and girls, good governance and poverty reduction. He has worked for the UN in Afghanistan, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, China, Timor Leste and Vietnam. A graduate with an MSc (Econ) in Strategic Studies from the University of Wales, United Kingdom, he began his career at Midland Montagu investment bank and worked for several years in London, New York and Dusseldorf.
Gerald has extensive experience in Central Asia, having worked with GTZ in Kyrgyzstan and with UNDP in Bishkek. He has worked with UNOPS in several East Asian countries and later established and headed its sub-regional office in Beijing, serving on the China and Mongolia UN Country Teams.
