Work together to achieve sustainable food and nutrition security

Achieving food security for all is at the heart of FAO’s efforts- to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives.

Our three main goals are: the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; the elimination of poverty and the driving forward of economic and social progress for all; and, the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit and future generations.

FAO has collaborated with Kyrgyzstan since 1993, when the country joined the Organization. First opened in 2009, the country office was upgraded in 2012 and FAO Representative appointed in 2014. Technical expertise FAO provides covers the agriculture sector, including crop, livestock and fisheries projects and support to sustainable land and forest management in the face of climate change.

Assistance in Kyrgyzstan is shaped by the 2015-2017 FAO Country Programming Framework (CPF), which centres on four priority areas: ­

·         Enhancing capacities to assess, plan and implement action for achieving sustainable food and nutrition security

·         Strengthening professional and institutional capacities, legal frameworks and support services for sustainable use of natural resources for agricultural productivity growth, effective inclusive agricultural value chains, and increased rural income, with emphasis on the fisheries and livestock sectors ­

·         Improving resilience to climate change, crises and disasters, through the elaboration of ad hoc strategies for disaster risk reduction and emergency response, including support to vulnerable rural populations ­

·         Enhancing capacities for strengthening a socially sensitive market economy to reduce rural poverty, especially among women-headed households

  • The UN welcomes the adoption of the Food Security and Nutrition Programme in Kyrgyzstan for 2019-2023

    The UN agencies in the Kyrgyz Republic welcome the adoption of a comprehensive program of food security and nutrition, which is aimed at ensuring the food security of every Kyrgyz citizen during 2019-2023.

  • Experts Discuss Industrial and Technological Priorities in Kyrgyzstan

    The fourth in a series of development dialogues gathered leading experts, representatives of international organisations, as well as state ministries and agencies of Kyrgyzstan to discuss “Industrial and Technological Development of Kyrgyzstan”. The half-day development dialogue took place in Bishkek on June 24th, and was co-organised by the United Nations system in Kyrgyzstan and the University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Institute of Public Policy and Administration (IPPA). These dialogues support work on a long-term national policy on key development issues for Kyrgyzstan.

  • “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”: United Nations celebrate the International Women's Day in Talas

    TALAS, 5 March 2019 – more than 400 young people gathered today in Talas to listen to speeches of famous Kyrgyz people, about how to achieve success in life and choose their dream profession. This event was held under the UN auspices, as part of a global campaign to promote the rights and opportunities of women and girls, which was dedicated to the International Women's Day, with an emphasis to promote equality, generate innovations and technology for the changes. UN agencies, the Ministry of Labour and Social Development of the Kyrgyz Republic and Talas regional state administration were the organizers of the meeting with the youth of Talas.

  • Geographical food labelling can ensure quality, promote rural development

    Geographical indication schemes help protect food products and produce that are characteristic to specific geographic areas. Giving certain foods special labels that are linked to their place of origin can play a special role in promoting sustainable rural development, improving farm income, and widening export opportunities. Common products include fruits, dairy and meat products (such as cheese and ham), and drinks, among many others.

  • UN talks "Every Girl Has a Dream" empower women and girls

    On 11 December 2018 the United Nations agencies conducted a meeting entitled “Every Girl Has a Dream!” in the format of UN talks in Bishkek. It was dedicated to the closure of the international campaign “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” in Kyrgyzstan. This year, the campaign was held under the slogan "#HearMeToo: end violence against women and girls."


    Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) held a joint seminar on the introduction of climate technologies in the agrifood sector of Kyrgyzstan.

    While food commodity prices have been generally stable, the cost of importing food is set to rise in 2017 to USD 1.413 trillion, a 6 percent increase from the previous year and the second highest tally on record according to FAO's latest Food Outlook report published today.

  • Rural Women in the Kyrgyz Republic improve agricultural productivity and design gender-sensitive local development plans through joint UN/Government project

    Participants of the joint UN and the Kyrgyz government “Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment” (RWEE) project increased their agricultural production by 30-70 percent over a 4 year period, thus confirming the benefits of increasing economic opportunities for rural women. Additionally, RWEE participants achieved a 30 percent increase in income from the launch of business activities such as greenhouses, bakeries, photo studios, computer courses, and carpet workshops, and contributed to reduced rural unemployment.

  • UN and the Kyrgyz Republic Sign Four-Year Development Assistance Framework

    The Kyrgyz Government and the United Nations (UN) signed today the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for 2018-2022, which is the planning framework for UN development collaboration in Kyrgyzstan over the next four years.

  • FAO and Eastern Europe and Central Asia countries explore the role of social protection for food security, nutrition and rural development

    More than 40 participants from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan, and development agencies such as UNICEF, UNDP and ILO, will meet on 25-26 April in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to discuss how social protection can contribute to eradicating poverty, fighting hunger and malnutrition and contributing to the development of rural areas in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

    Currently, dry forest areas of Kyrgyzstan are significantly degraded, and there is limited access to knowledge and innovative technologies for sustainable forest management (SFM) which contribute to obtain multiple ecological and socio - economic benefits.
