Valuable species of almond were sowed in the "Predtechenka" forest management sector

FAO,  20 April 2017 - Currently, dry forest areas of Kyrgyzstan are significantly degraded, and there is limited access to knowledge and innovative technologies for sustainable forest management (SFM) which contribute to obtain multiple ecological and socio - economic benefits.

The plot "Predtechenka” under the Jaiyl forest management sector is included into the list of the project activities as a pilot, and it is planned to conduct reforestation activities on the area of 56, 2 hectares in the framework of the project. Almonds, willows and fruit crops are planned for plantation. Besides, project plans to plant seeds of almonds and willows in spring 2017. Sowing of willow pegs has already finished.

Plots, seeding and planting time, soil processing technology and types of almonds were agreed with the Forest Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, State Agency on Environmental Protection and Forestry under the Kyrgyz Republic and Jayil forest management sector.

This activity is carried out in the framework of the project "Sustainable management of mountainous forest and land resources under conditions of climate change" of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Global Environment Facility according to Result 2.2, component 2 "Dryland forests restored/planted forests with the help of introduction and demonstration of innovative technologies/practices and reduced pressure on the forest."

576,2 hectares for sowing and planting of forests and activities to support natural regeneration on 721,5 hectares are planned to be implemented on territories of the Jaiyl forest sector, Institute of Forest of National Academy of Sciences, vocational school No. 102, and Sosnovsky Ayil Aymak (village management). 

Reference: Project FAO/GEF "Sustainable management of mountainous forest and land resources under conditions of climate change" is implemented in Kyrgyzstan since the beginning of 2015. The main objectives of the project are implementation of sustainable technologies for forest, agricultural and pasture lands, increase resource productivity and income of inhabitants of mountain regions of the Kyrgyz Republic. The project activities are carried out within the 8 forest management sectors: Jaiyl, Chui oblast, Tyup and Jety-Oguz of Issyk-Kul oblast, Kochkor and Ak - Talaa of Naryn oblast, Kara - Alminskiy and Kochkor - Atinskiy of Jalal-Abad oblast and Nookat of Osh oblast.
