80 women in police gathered at UNODC-supported capacity building training in Osh

OSH, 28 March 2017 – Strengthening policing skills and building management and leadership capacity of women in police is the focus of a four-day United Nations Office on drugs and crime Programme for Central Asia (UNODC ROCA) – supported training  opened  today in Osh city.

The training, organized in partnership with the Kyrgyz Ministry of Interior, brings together 80 female officers from southern police departments of Batken, Jalal-Abad and Osh. It is aimed at contributing to the career advancement of women in the police service by teaching them relevant personal and professional skills.

According to Kursan Asanov, Deputy Minister of Interior , in addition to professionalism, communication and leadership skills are essential qualities of any police officer in contemporary society. “These training sessions provide police women with an opportunity to gain knowledge and  develop team work and management skills, which will contribute to their professional growth within our police service”.

“Building the capacity of women in police, in particular in the field of community policing, is essential to ensuring the protection of women’s rights and effectively addressing security challenges across the country”, said Vera Tkachenko, UNODC international manager.   

During the training-course, participants will improve their interpersonal communication, presentation, analytical, critical thinking and leadership skills, as well as obtain knowledge on new criminal legislation, criminal investigations, crime prevention, prevention of violent extremism and gender-based violence.

Training is organized as part of the Crime prevention, criminal justice and integrity sub-programme of the UNODC Programme for Central Asia for 2015-2019 which is funded by the US State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).
