In Kyrgyzstan, youth are at the forefront of building peaceful communities
A UN Women programme in Kyrgyzstan has empowered 15,000 young people to prevent violence, promote gender equality and build tolerance of diversity in their communities. Initiatives such as “My Safe and Peaceful School” and “My Prosperous Farm” are teaching respectful relationships, life and livelihood skills to young people in remote villages, building a better future for all.

Kyrgyzstan is one of the countries with low breastfeeding rates
Bishkek, 1 August 2017 –UNICEF and World Health Organization (WHO) jointly with other academic institutions have conducted research “The Global Breastfeeding Scorecard” which evaluated 194 nations and found that only 40 per cent of children younger than six months are breastfed exclusively (given nothing but breast milk) and only 23 countries have exclusive breastfeeding rates above 60 per cent. According to UNICEF research in Kyrgyzstan, only 41% of children under 6 months are exclusively breastfed, and the number of children who are on predominant breastfeeding, comprises 69,5 per cent.

UN Women presents a research on "Professional and Marriage Choices of Youth in Kyrgyzstan"
In 2015 and 2016, UN Women Kyrgyzstan having worked on girl empowerment and youth participation for a number of years saw an opportunity to prepare a cadre of young national researchers and facilitate them in conducting research on professional and marriage choices of youth aged 14 through 28 in Kyrgyzstan. The aim was to understand the prevailing knowledge, attitudes and practices of youth that results in structural and socially accepted discrimination against girls and young women, and to identify strategies to empower them to make informed choices on marriage and career.

UNODC and Kyrgyzstan team-up to promote sports for youth crime prevention
In mid-June, UNODC experts met with a range of Government officials and non-state actors in Kyrgyzstan to explore ways to expand cooperation in tackling crime and drug use through using sports. The meetings, held in the capital Bishkek, were an important step towards rolling-out UNODC’s global initiative which aims to prevent delinquency among at-risk youth as part of the Doha Declaration Global Programme as well as the Office’s 2015-2019 Regional Programme for Central Asia.

More than half of young children deprived of play and early learning activities with their fathers - UNICEF
BISHEK/NEW YORK, 16 June 2017 – More than half – or 55 per cent - of children aged between 3 and 4 years-old in 74 countries – approximately 40 million – have fathers who do not play or engage in early learning activities with them, according to a new UNICEF analysis. In Kyrgyzstan, 61 per cent of children of this age lack play and early learning activities with their fathers.

Rural Women in the Kyrgyz Republic improve agricultural productivity and design gender-sensitive local development plans through joint UN/Government project
Participants of the joint UN and the Kyrgyz government “Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment” (RWEE) project increased their agricultural production by 30-70 percent over a 4 year period, thus confirming the benefits of increasing economic opportunities for rural women. Additionally, RWEE participants achieved a 30 percent increase in income from the launch of business activities such as greenhouses, bakeries, photo studios, computer courses, and carpet workshops, and contributed to reduced rural unemployment.

At least 2.7 million children are living in residential care worldwide, UNICEF says
GENEVA/NEW YORK/BISHKEK, 2 June 2017: At least 2.7 million children live in residential care worldwide according to official records from 140 countries, according to a new estimate by UNICEF. Yet the figures published today are likely to be just the tip of the iceberg, with wide gaps in data collection and accurate records found in the majority of countries.
