UNICEF: Children in contact with the law: introduction of child-friendly procedures in Kyrgyzstan
Karakol, Kyrgyzstan, 5 December 2017 – Today the City Department of Internal Affairs and the City Court in Karakol opened child-friendly facilities for children in contact with the law implementing the State Programme on Justice for Children (2014-2018). Member of the Parliament Irina Karamushkina, British Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic Robin Ord-Smith, UNICEF Representative in the Kyrgyz Republic Yukie Mokuo, and Deputy Governor of the Issyk-Kul province Elmira Usenova opened child-friendly courtrooms and waiting rooms designed to provide a friendly environment to child victims, witnesses and children in conflict with the law.

Multidisciplinary Approach to HIV Prevention is an Effective Way to Achieve the Global Target ‘90-90-90’.
A working meeting of multidisciplinary teams (MDT) took place on November 22 – 24 at family medicine centers of Osh, Batken, Jalal-Abad, Chui and Issyk-Kul oblasts. 80 people participated at this meeting, including FMC directors, physicians-in-chief, infectious disease doctors, nurses, peer consultants, international partners and representatives of non-for-profit organizations.

15-year-old Kirsina Alieva ‘took over’ the position of Dastan Bekeshev, Member of the Parliament in Kyrgyzstan in the framework of the World Children’s Day celebration. On behalf of 29,000 children with disabilities living in Kyrgyzstan, she demanded to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.

UNODC contributes to public safety through supporting prison-based rehabilitation programme in Kyrgyzstan
Today, the State Service of Punishment under the Government of Kyrgyzstan and United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime signs an action plan to support implementation of vocational training and income-generating activities in female and male prisons to support bakery as well as shoe and sewing production. Overall UNODC will provide around 135 000 USD to support prison-based rehabilitation programme that will benefit more than 100 prisoners.

Family planning is a right for life
WHO estimates that 225 million women in developing countries would like to delay or avoid pregnancy but do not use any method of contraception. Complications during pregnancy and delivery are the main reason of death among young women. More than 287 000 women die in the world annually during pregnancy and delivery. Maternal death rates in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are among the highest in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

UNODC promotes sports as tool for peace on Kyrgyz-Tajik border
Kulundu is a municipality in the southern Batken province of Kyrgyzstan on the border with Tajikistan. The people living in this remote, rural area - over 25,000 in total - mostly earn their living by engaging in agriculture and cross-border trade. Labour migration to Russia and other countries is common and remittances are an important source of income for the community.
