    World Health Organization: Europe observes a 400% increase in measles cases in 2017 compared to previous year

    Measles has rebounded in the WHO European Region. The disease affected 21 315 people and caused 35 deaths in 2017, following a record low of 5273 cases in 2016. The WHO Regional Office for Europe has released new data for 2017 one day ahead of a health ministerial meeting on immunization in Montenegro on 20 February 2018.

    On 6 February Sapar Isakov, the Prime Minister, Dr. Ozonnia Ojielo, the UN Resident Coordinator/ UNDP Resident Representative and HE Yoshihiro Yamamura, the Ambassador of Japan have participated in the handover ceremony of 16 mobile hubs. The Government of Kyrgyzstan has received 16 vans with special equipment to enhance the quality and the mobility of state services provided by the State Registration Service.

    WHO is to release a new report that will provide targeted recommendations on enhancing hospital safety and disaster preparedness in Kyrgyzstan. The report is based on an assessment of the safety of the country’s hospital system as a whole. The assessment identified weaknesses and informed remedial measures to strengthen hospital readiness and response as part of the national disaster preparedness strategy and related interventions.

    Road safety: Kyrgyzstan sees decrease in deaths

    A policy dialogue on road safety in Kyrgyzstan in October 2016 resulted in many initiatives to improve road safety. A year on, Deputy Minister of Health Dr Amangeldy Murzaliev invited 30 stakeholders from across Government, health service providers, the police force, Parliament and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to assess the progress made. WHO organized the meeting with the Ministry of Health as part of the biennial collaborative agreement between the 2 bodies.

    Bekzhan Arakeev (22 years old) is a young already well-known entrepreneur in Yzar village of Jalal-Abad province. He is an initiator of the successful project on creating the plastic windows and doors manufacturing workshop. This specialized workshop is the first in Yzar village, where there are 3173 residents, and it becomes more popular day by day among the villagers. For him, the UNDP project “Youth for peaceful change” at the expense of the UN Peacebuilding Fund has become the main tool to achieve his ideas and funding, that gave him an opportunity to not only become independent but also widely share information about the opportunities for active youth.

    Every year between 25,000 and 30,000 crimes are registered in Kyrgyzstan. One third of these crimes -- over 10,000 -- occur in the capital, Bishkek. With 1,341 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants in 2016, the Sverdlovsk district has the highest crime rate in the city.
