United Nations in Kyrgyzstan refuses single-use plastic
On June 14, 2018 the United Nations Country Team in Kyrgyzstan made a decision to stop using single-use plastics at meetings and events supported by the United Nations. We will work with hotels, service providers, and partners to urge them to follow our green policy. It is aimed at deepening environmental awareness about the major environmental challenges created by omnipresent global products, especially plastic bottles and plastic shopping bags.

UNICEF statement on observing children’s right to privacy and confidentiality
UNICEF is concerned about the recent public release of pictures, names and personal data of children allegedly involved in some crimes. In line with the principle of the best interest of the child, enshrined in the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic as well as in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF calls all the authorities and media outlets to avoid identification of children in contact with the law.

WHO and UNICEF issue new guidance to promote breastfeeding in health facilities
WHO and UNICEF issued new ten-step guidance to increase support for breastfeeding in health facilities that provide maternity and newborn services. Breastfeeding all babies for the first 2 years would save the lives of more than 820 000 children under age 5 annually. The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding encourages new mothers to breastfeed and informs health workers how best to support breastfeeding. Breastfeeding within the first hour of birth protects newborn babies from infections.

A new three-year project funded by the European Union to end violence against women and girls in Kyrgyzstan started out today, 10 April 2018, at City Hotel, Bishkek. The Inception Workshop of the new project “Across Generations and Gender Borders – Communities Combatting Gender-Based Violence in Kyrgyzstan” of today brings together EU and UN representatives, Kyrgyz government officials, parliament members and civil society representatives to discuss the way forward for eliminating violence against women and girls.
