Countries meet to accelerate progress in maternal and newborn health in Central Asia and the Caucasus
BISHKEK, 20 July 2017 - Health experts from around the world have come together in Bishkek to an intercountry Symposium to discuss ways and opportunities to accelerate maternal and newborn health in Central Asia and the Caucasus regions, all part of the strategy to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UNICEF and the European Union strengthen the resilience of 700,000 children to cope with natural disasters in Central Asia and the South Caucus
BRUSSELS/ BISHKEK, 6 July 2017 – More than 1 million people including 700,000 children are better prepared to cope with natural disasters in eight countries prone to earthquakes, floods and landslides in Central Asia and the South Caucus as the result of a UNICEF programme supported by the European Union.
Bekzhan Arakeev (22 years old) is a young already well-known entrepreneur in Yzar village of Jalal-Abad province. He is an initiator of the successful project on creating the plastic windows and doors manufacturing workshop. This specialized workshop is the first in Yzar village, where there are 3173 residents, and it becomes more popular day by day among the villagers. For him, the UNDP project “Youth for peaceful change” at the expense of the UN Peacebuilding Fund has become the main tool to achieve his ideas and funding, that gave him an opportunity to not only become independent but also widely share information about the opportunities for active youth.
From a landfill to a greenhouse: a story of transformation
A local farmer has managed to eliminate a landfill in the center of the village of Jylkeldi (Ak-Tash aiyl okmotu, Kara-Suu district, Osh region) and built a greenhouse on this spot with a total area of 770 square meters.

Every year between 25,000 and 30,000 crimes are registered in Kyrgyzstan. One third of these crimes -- over 10,000 -- occur in the capital, Bishkek. With 1,341 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants in 2016, the Sverdlovsk district has the highest crime rate in the city.

Food Security Atlas, Kyrgyz Republic, 2016
The National Food Security Atlas reviews 28 indicators selected for measuring various aspects of food security in accordance with the Food Law of the Kyrgyz Republic which defines food security as a state where physical and economic access to food is guaranteed for the population, in accordance with minimal norms of food consumption6. To support a better understanding of food security situation, the National Food Security Atlas groups these indicators into four dimensions of food security: availability, access, utilization and stability.

The forest map goes digital
To launch a single database, 6 desktops of increased capacity and additional equipment were handed over to the forestry of the country. Bishkek Primary School Children Will Improve Their Nutrition Knowledge During The WFP-Supported Healthy Eating Week
On the kick-off of the new academic year, the UN World Food Programme, Bishkek City Hall and the Russian Social and Industrial Foodservice Institute (SIFI) today launched the Healthy Eating Week in the capital school #64. The weeklong initiative include sessions on healthy food and active life-style as well as art master-classes and sports activities aiming to promote healthy eating and hygiene skills among children and their parents.
